Smoking cessation in a cardiac setting

Cigarette smoking is a major cause of heart attack, stroke and peripheral artery disease. Only fifty percent of cardiac patients who were smoking at the time of their cardiac event manage to quit smoking. Unfortunately half of those who quit resume smoking. Interventions from health professionals can be very effective in enhancing quitting rates and achieving more effective cessation.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Understanding why people smoke and how they quit
  • A framework to assist you with patient intervention
  •  Strategies and skills to motivate patients
  • Information about quitting medication

This workshop has been jointly developed by Quit Victoria and the Heart Research Centre with funding provided by the Department of Health and Ageing.
