Dr Barbara Murphy is Principal Research Fellow at the Heart
Research Centre (HRC) in Melbourne. She has
over 20 years' experience in psychological and behavioural research in the
areas of depression, coronary heart disease and women's health. Her PhD study
investigated predictors of depression in adults, with more recent work investigating
depression and emotional adjustment in cardiac patients. She is currently the
Chief Investigator on a study of depression in regional and rural cardiac
patients, funded by the Beyondblue Victorian Centre of Excellence. She is also
CI on a long-term follow-up study of depression as a predictor of mortality
after cardiac events. During her ten years at the HRC,
Dr Murphy has also been involved in a randomised controlled trial investigating
interventions to enhance psychological recovery and health behaviour change in
cardiac patients, and several longitudinal studies of outcomes after acute
cardiac events. She assists the Director in coordinating the research program
at the HRC and supervises several research
staff and higher degree students. As part of the HRC
training program, she trains health professionals working in the cardiac
rehabilitation and secondary prevention in Australia in relation to psychosocial
aspects of cardiac disease, cognitive behaviour therapy, and cardiac
rehabilitation program evaluation.
Dr Murphy is a consultant to the National Heart Foundation
of Australia's "Engaging Women" theme as part of the 2008-2012 strategic planning.
In 2007 she was a consultant to the British Cardiac Society's (BCS) Guidelines for the secondary prevention of heart
disease, and is currently a member of the BCS
Working Group for Women's Heart Health. She is one of two external members of
the Evaluation Committee for the federally funded Mental Health Professional
Network (MHPN).
Dr Murphy has over 45 publications in refereed journals and
has presented at numerous national and international conferences. She reviews
grant applications for several Australian funding bodies and reviews
manuscripts for numerous national and international journals, including one as
a member of the editorial board.
Dr Murphy holds honorary positions in the Department of
Psychiatry at The University of Melbourne and the Department of Behavioural
Medicine at The University of Newcastle.
