Dr Michelle Macvean - Research Fellow

Michelle Macvean is a psychosocial researcher who completed her undergraduate degree and PhD in Disability Studies at Deakin University. Early in her career, Michelle undertook research in the areas of early childhood intervention and family support, primary school education, social and communication skills development, disability services and carer support. She also lectured in psychology, family support, physical development and behaviour analysis.

Since 2001, Michelle has been investigating the psychosocial impact of cancer on patients and partners. She coordinated a longitudinal study into psychiatric morbidity in men with early stage and advanced prostate cancer. This project also involved a comparison with men without cancer and a parallel study with the female partners of the men with prostate cancer. Michelle has also coordinated a longitudinal telephone-based randomised controlled trial which aimed to reduce the needs, anxiety and depression of people with colorectal cancer. The program involved trained volunteers providing information, support and referrals to patients in the early months following diagnosis. In addition to her research coordination role, Michelle co-trained and supervised the team of volunteers.

Michelle joined the Heart Research Centre in January 2010. She is looking forward to continuing her psychosocial and quality of life research in cardiac patients, their spouses and other family members.
