During the 1990’s she was a consultant to the National Heart Foundation and the Baker Heart Research Institute on studies relating to both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. She has been Senior Research Fellow at the Heart Research Centre in Melbourne for the past seven years, and has recently been appointed as Principal Research Fellow. Her work focuses on the psychosocial consequences of cardiac disease, particularly depression and social isolation, with recent studies investigating the trajectories of anxiety and depression after myocardial infarction and bypass surgery. Dr Murphy has presented findings of this work at recent national and international conferences, including those convened by the Australasian Society of Behavioural Health and Medicine (ASBHM), the International Congress of Behavioural Medicine and the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association (ACRA). She was an invited speaker at the 2006 ACRA conference in Melbourne, presenting on the psychological consequences of cardiac disease in women. She was Chair of the Scientific Program Committee, ASBHM conference held in Auckland in 2006, and was on the Organising Committee for the ASBHM conference held in Melbourne in 2005. Dr Murphy has over 40 publications in referred journals and is co-author of one book. She currently holds honorary positions in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Melbourne and the Department of Behavioural Medicine at The University of Newcastle.
