Print E-mail

Chronic disease self management (CDSM) requires clients to make changes to their attitudes and behaviours. To assist in this process more effectively, health professionals need to acquire new skills. In this practical training program you will learn evidence based strategies to enhance the ability of your clients to self manage their chronic disease. These strategies are based on motivational interviewing and cognitive behaviour therapy and can be used with both groups and individuals. Opportunities to build skills through practice will be incorporated into this program.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Motivating patients
  • Dealing with resistance
  • Increasing self-efficacy
  • Addressing barriers to lifestyle change
  • Working with thoughts
  • Planning to reduce relapse
